Faith Healing: How Many More Children Will Die ? June 18, 1997-- ââ¬Å"Only six more days until my birthday! Wow! I canââ¬â¢t believe Iââ¬â¢m going to be seventeen finally! Even though Iââ¬â¢m excited, I wish I could start feeling better. Iââ¬â¢m not really too sick, but I still am a little scared. In my heart, I wish I could go see a doctor, but I know that I could never tell my mom and dad that. Even if they heard me say it, they still wouldnââ¬â¢t listen to me, no matter how sick I was. I know Iââ¬â¢m supposed to have faith that God will heal me, but right now Iââ¬â¢m so afraid. I canââ¬â¢t die now. There is too much stuff I still want to do; I have so many hopes and dreams for my future...â⬠Shannon Nixon never lived to see her 17th birthday. On June 21, 1997, only three days before her birthday, Shannon went into a diabetic coma and died shortly after. In all her life, she had never been to a hospital, seen the inside of an ambulance or even visited her local doctorââ¬â¢s office. Even at birth, she was delivered without the aid of a doctor or nurse. Shannonââ¬â¢s parents refused to seek medical help for her or any of their other nine children. Her parents are members of the Faith Tabernacle Church, where all the members solely believe in the power of faith healing (Dowell). Faith healing is defined by Webster as a method of treating diseases by prayer and exercise of faith in God. The members of the Faith Tabernacle church, as well as many other groups in the United States including the Christian Scientists and the Followers of Christ, believe that the right and power to heal is solely Godââ¬â¢s. ââ¬Å"Like many fellow Pentecostals, the Followers believe the Bible prescribes prayer and the laying on of hands to cure physical ills. Unlike most, however, Followers reportedly refuse medical treatment-- for themselves or for their childrenâ⬠(Biema). The Followers believe that any medicine or doctoral attention is putting faith in people instead of God. Whether itââ¬â¢s something as minor as a mere finger cut, or as dangerously deadly as diabetes or leukemia, the family refuses to seek medical contact or attention. This belief has been around since Biblical times. James 5:14 says, ââ¬Å"Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the c hurch to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord (NIV).

My Philosophy of Teaching
My Philosophy of Teaching Every child or adolescent is capable of learning if they receive the proper motivation and instruction. ââ¬Å"A teacher's personal philosophy of education is a critical element in his or her approach to guiding children along the path of enlightenment. â⬠- Barbra Wilt. My philosophy of education gives me the attitude needed to support students during their journey as a life long learner. I strongly believe that education is about contributing to childrenââ¬â¢s ability to think independently, create their own ideas, and become successful individuals. A teacher must be one who appreciates and respects the value of an education and the positive impact it has on all children. I highly feel that once the devotion for education and love for children are there, then the driving force to be an effective teacher will become stronger and stronger. For me, my love for teaching alone is the driving force in my decision to dedicate my career to being an effective educator. When I think about what education means and what an education looks like; I do not picture straight rows and columns full of eager students ready to learn. I visualize a more realistic picture; one which has small circles for group work, center stations ready for differentiated instruction to take place, and students waiting for the proper motivation to spark their eager minds. I strongly feel that a classroom should be highly interactive yet manageable, full of discussion and cooperative learning. I believe that assessment drives instruction and education in todayââ¬â¢s diverse world. A variety of assessment allows one to provide effective instruction and evaluate achievement and learning. I think that assessment is a tool which provides valuable information for educators. With this tool an educator can better meet the needs diverse learners. My idea of a perfect teacher is one who inspires learning in addition to just relating required facts. An ideal teacher applies differentiated instruction and adjusts the curriculum accordingly. My philosophy of education involves a curriculum that provides multiple choices for taking in information, a variety of options for making sense of ideas, and alternative ways for expressing ideas. A teacher should be prepared and ready to implement all of these strategies. As a result of an effective ducation students can become engaged in real world activities. Education is what prepares students to problem solve in a variety of environments and socialize with others. The nurturing environment an education gives exposes children and adolescents to a multiple of life skills they will need on their journey into adulthood. Education gives us the knowledge of the world around us. It develops in us a perspective of looking at life. Someone once told me education is instrumental in the development of our values and virtues, and I strongly agree. Education arms us with an insight to look at our lives and learn from every experience. Overall, having an education is so important because it equips us with all that is needed to make our dreams come true. Education opens doors of brilliant career opportunities and gives us choices. An education gives us the opportunity to have better prospects in career and growth. Education is essential as it paves the path leading to success. Most importantly, education instills a sense of pride and knowledge one will need to prepare themselves in life!

Hemingwayââ¬â¢s, A Farewell to Arms Does The Film Do Justice...
A Farewell to Arms, published in 1929, is a classic short story written by Ernest Hemingway about the hardships and cruelties of love and war. In 1932, a film adaptation of the novel was developed by Director Frank Borzage and nonetheless the unquestionable originality of his photography as well as for his excellent directorial concepts; Borzage misses on many levels of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s brilliant description and significant dialogue between the main character Lieutenant Frederic Henry and his fellow Italian officers. The film is voiced and positioned towards the eyes of Borzage rather than the story of Hemingway and the incidents are frequently noticeable throughout the film. But to be reasonable, the novel is a difficult task, considering thatâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Also in the film, a viewer is confused as to where the characters are in the film, and when Lieutenant Henry decides to escape from Italy to Switzerland the glimpse of him getting into a boat is not recollected within the novel as Henry goes to Milan to find Catherine so they can leave for Switzerland together. The confrontation between Catherine and Henry appears to gather up hastily within the film and whenever Catherine and Frederic begin to acknowledge their love for one another, the melodrama comes forth and the story becomes intolerably sentimental. To me, it seemed as if the director feared he could not get in all that we wanted into the film and as a result, missed several of incidents of Hemingwayââ¬â¢s novel. Also to exasperate this point, Borzage ordered that an alternate, upbeat finale be added with a sensible happier ending, worried that audiences would dislike the dark ending that is in the novel. The movie ends with the conclusion of the war (in the novel, war is still happening) and Frederic carrying Catherineââ¬â¢s body to the window while he declares, ââ¬Å"Peace, Peace!â⬠on the other hand, the book ends with the quote, ââ¬Å"After a while I went out a nd left the hospital and walked back to the hotel in the rain,â⬠ending the book in a more dark and unresolved manner. This portrays Borzage as overdramatic, for example, as Catherine lie dying in the hospital, Frederic cries, ââ¬Å"You cant die.
